Ten digits stand between your parcel and its American customer.

Every order you ship to the US now clears customs, and customs wants a 10-digit tariff code for each product. Drop in your Shopify export and get every code back in minutes, in a file Shopify imports directly.

How to read a US tariff code

Base duty is the general rate before any extra tariffs tied to country of origin. Examples use the official USITC schedule, 2026 Revision 21.

Why this matters now

For years, parcels under $800 entered the US duty-free with almost no paperwork. That is over, and it is not coming back.

  1. Aug 29, 2025

Duty-free entry for parcels under $800 suspended for every country.

  2. Jun 24, 2026

US Customs makes the suspension indefinite for every shipping method.

  3. Oct 22, 2026

New entry requirements for parcels sent by post start to apply.

  4. Jul 1, 2027

A law passed in 2025 ends the exemption for good.

A code you can check, not just a number

Every code comes from the current US tariff schedule and is checked against it, so you never get one that doesn't exist. Anything less than certain goes on a short review sheet that says what to confirm.

We fill it in when your product text states it ("Made in Portugal"). Otherwise the review sheet lists what's missing, so you can add it once per supplier.

Questions

Why do I need US tariff codes now?

The US suspended the duty-free exemption for parcels under $800 in August 2025, made the suspension indefinite in June 2026, and a 2025 law ends it permanently on July 1, 2027. Shipments to US customers now go through duty assessment, and carriers ask for an HTS code and country of origin. Missing or vague codes cause delays, held parcels and wrong duty charges.

Which files do I need?

Your duties export (Shopify admin, Settings, Taxes and duties, Duties and import taxes, Manage, Update with CSV, Export) and your products export (Products, Export, CSV). The second file gives us descriptions and product types, which make the codes more accurate. The tool walks you through it.

How accurate are the codes?

Each one comes from the official schedule and carries a confidence rating with a short reason. High-confidence codes are usually right as delivered. Medium and low ones list exactly what to confirm, such as fiber content or gender, because those facts change the code.

Does Shopify actually use these codes?

Yes. Shopify reads the HS code and country of origin on each product to estimate duties and import taxes at checkout and to fill in customs forms when you buy shipping labels. Our file goes straight into those fields.

Are you a customs broker?

No. HSClarity provides suggested classifications to help you prepare your data. As the importer or shipper, you remain responsible for what you declare. For a legally binding decision on a product, US Customs offers binding rulings.

What happens to my files?

Your files are read in your own browser. Only product titles, types and descriptions are sent to our classifier to produce the codes, and we don't keep them. We never sell or share your catalog.
